MEET THE TEAM: Rasmus – 10 years with Raya, now training divers in Phuket
With over ten years of experience and a true passion for diving, Raya Divers’ very own veteran is now a certified PADI Instructor! Rasmus started his diving career with Raya nearly a decade ago and has gained experience across multiple locations throughout Thailand. This winter, he’s part of the Phuket team.
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Rasmus, a diving instructor at Raya Divers. You’ll usually find me on the Phuket day boat Bella, and sometimes on a liveaboard trip to the Similan Islands.
In which destinations have you worked before?
Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, and Koh Lanta.
Where are you from, and what did you do before joining Raya Divers?
I’m from Finland and spend the summer seasons working in our family business. I started diving at the age of 14 together with my mother on a Raya Divers course at Raya Yai Island – and that’s really where it all began.
What’s the best thing about your current location?
The team – many familiar faces from years ago. Phuket also has absolutely everything you could need: variety, options, and something for everyone.
Favorite dive site and why?
Koh Haa, and I could dive there every day! The marine life is incredibly diverse – there’s always a chance to see something big, but also plenty to discover for those who enjoy spotting small and rare species. I’m already looking forward to the next liveaboard trip to Koh Haa.
Favorite Thai dish, and where’s the best place to eat it?
If I had to choose one, it would be larb gai (spicy minced chicken salad) or khao soi (northern Thai curry noodle soup). The best thing about Thai food is really its variety.
– Larb gai: Restaurant Bite, right across from the Phuket office.
– Khao soi: Restaurant Mae Pa in Khao Lak.
Big fish or small critters?
My heart beats for all the small critters, but an occasional big surprise always brings a smile to my face.
Singha, Chang or fruit shake?
Usually a mango–passionfruit shake, or sometimes an occasional Leo.
Beach bar or nightclub?
Beach bar. The best moment is watching the sunset with the team or friends, chatting and enjoying the view with your toes in the sand.
Funniest or best moment of this season?
This year marks ten years since I first joined Raya Divers and trained as a dive guide. The best part is that Tomi and Terhi, who took the course with me, are still part of the same team here in Phuket.
